"Gilbert’s art relies on layering and mixed media. Inked illustrations of animals, teeth and people are
superimposed over backgrounds bright with lines, bursts and splatters of color or refined tapestry prints. His paintings
are the culmination of a series of experiences and obsessions. He developed a fascination with graffiti while in junior
high, when his parents allowed him to keep a board in the backyard to “tag.” He completed a degree in fine
arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York, where he started out studying illustration and wound up graduating with
a focus on painting..."
