Artist Profile | Nate Schnell Schnell's works blend a carefully lined illustrative style with landscapes that border on impressionistic - littered as they are with fuzzy trees and lush tonal color fields. The effect gives all of his works a sense of collage, mixing styles that manage to simultaneously evoke the quaint nostalgia of weathered advertisements and sharp edges of specimen drawings. That juxtaposition seems an invitation to imagery, an inticement to imagine the alien terrain just out of focus, and perhaps to imagine yourself part of the odd and unfamiliar place - perhaps (to paraphrase the artist) to imagine taking off. "Sometimes, I have an idea or sometimes I just start with a block of color," Schnell says. "There's no regular patterning. I like to start from non-living objects, and then give them life." - Excerpt by Carla Kocurek - Rare Magazine - June 2008 |
